Summer 2024 Design Trends

1. Natural Elements and Organic Modern
Bringing the outdoors in has always been a summer staple, but this year, the focus is on neutral-colored surfaces, wood, stone accents, and lots of greenery. Another key factor to consider is the importance of environmentally conscious materials, giving your home a chic yet responsible update. Biophilic Design Tips and Techniques for Your Kitchen

2. Dark and Moody
Moody decor is experiencing a surge in popularity, with searches for terms like “moody living room” and “moody kitchen” more than doubling compared to the same time in 2023. This shift likely comes as a response to the dominance of bright whites and light grays in recent interior design trends. Designers on Houzz are increasingly turning to dark and moody colors to craft spaces that feel cozy and intimate or striking and dramatic. For instance, using layers of rich browns and dark reds can create a warm and inviting atmosphere in a “moody bedroom,” a term that has seen an 85% increase in searches year over year. Even subtle touches of darkness can have a significant impact; searches for “dark ceiling” have risen by 60% compared to last year, indicating a growing interest in this trend.

3. Japanese Influence
Japanese design, known for its simplicity, natural elements, and harmonious living spaces, is experiencing a resurgence. This trend is evident in the significant increase in searches for Japanese-inspired kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Specifically, searches for “Japandi living room,” a hybrid style that blends Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian functionality, have risen by 48%. Additionally, two Japanese design aesthetics that present the home as a sanctuary — “wabi-sabi” and “zen garden” — have also seen growth on Houzz, with search increases of 44% and 22%, respectively.

4. Wellness
Wellness features continue to dominate trending searches on Houzz. In the first quarter of the year, terms like “cold plunge,” “indoor sauna,” “home spa,” and “backyard sauna” have all seen significant increases compared to Q1 2023. Homeowners also seek professionals on Houzz to enhance the natural light in their homes, which is crucial for maintaining the body’s intrinsic rhythm. Consequently, searches for “large windows” and “skylights” have also risen, reflecting this growing interest in wellness-oriented home improvements.

2024 Summer Trends Report
With these exciting trends on the horizon, welcoming summer into your home has never been easier or more stylish. Embrace the season with these new approaches to make your space shine.
